The Yawp: A Public Poetry Project
Unscrew the locks from the doors!
Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!
-- Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself"
In June of 1855, Walt Whitman paid for the printing of the first edition of Leaves of Grass, a book which would, in many ways, define and guide American literature. The Yawp is a public poetry project inspired by Whitman’s democratic vision.
The Yawp seeks poetry by the people, for the people, of the people.
The Yawp seeks to unscrew the locks from the doors, the doors from their jambs, the pages of books from their spines, and the words from the pages themeselves.
The Yawp seeks to empower people to take language into their own hands, and to inspire them to put language into the hands of others.
The Yawp looks outside of traditional publishing to find new ways, new visions, new vistas for people to sound their barbaric yawps.
The Yawp wants to hear what you have to confide.
The Yawp wants you to prove it is not already too late.
The Yawp stops here, waiting for you.
Fascinating! I want MORE!
